DESCRIPTION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:
The Shunter is responsible for safely preparing, shunting and disposing of traction and rolling stock operated by Loram UK to meet depot formation and yard requirements, and operating equipment in the RTC Yard as required.
This post ensures that trains are operated safely within the yard area in accordance with planned movements and represents Loram UK in contact and communication with Network Rail and other customers in accordance with our values.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
Strategic and Functional
- Control shunting movements within the RTC Yard and permitted movements in the Derby area.
- Follow the directions of the Shunter Manager with regards to depot work requirements.
- Couple and uncouple rail vehicles, prepare trains for service, compile train lists and other supporting documentation to ensure the safe operation of trains, and ensure that vehicles berthed have been correctly berthed and secured.
- Operate the EDU traverser as required.
- Accept and supervise fuel deliveries to the RTC Yard and deliver fuel to rail vehicles.
- Communicate with operational staff regarding train running information (typically Derby PSB).
- Ensure that any vehicle defects are recorded and advised to the Shunter Manager.
- Work in accordance with applicable targets to meet the required production schedule.
- Comply with all safety, environmental and quality management system requirements, and responsibilities.
Compliance
- Maintain knowledge of working systems, vehicle types, rules and company instructions.
- Comply with guidance around shift working/lifestyle and ensure you report for duty fit and adequately rested.
- Ensure good housekeeping, cleanliness and tidiness of yard environment.

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: GCSE Maths & English Grade C/4 (or equivalent).
Experience: Minimum 1 year experience in rail operations.
Minimum 1 year rail safety awareness.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- To work towards and be assessed as competent in relevant/appropriate Loram UK competence management modules or equivalent
- A working knowledge of the Rules and Regulations contained in GE/RT8000.
- Route knowledge, sectional appendix and working instruction awareness for the Derby RTC yard.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in relevant subject.
