GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:
The Senior Manager, Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) is responsible for developing and executing the company’s EHS and sustainability strategies across North American operations. This role provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight of environmental compliance, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, and sustainability efforts. The Senior Manager works closely with executive leadership, field and manufacturing operations, HR, and Legal to ensure that EHS programs are integrated into business operations, drive performance improvement, reduce risk, and promote a culture of accountability and continuous learning. This position manages a team of professionals, supports enterprise-wide initiatives, and represents the organization in regulatory matters, audits, and external partnerships.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee and ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, federal, and international EHS regulations and standards, including OSHA, EPA, FRA, and Transport Canada.
- Set the strategic direction for EHS programs and lead implementation across all business units and field operations.
- Develop, deploy, and continuously improve integrated EHS management systems.
- Lead complex or high-risk investigations and collaborate with executive leadership on risk mitigation strategies and root cause resolution.
- Build strong cross-functional relationships to embed EHS priorities into business operations, project planning, and capital investment decisions.
- Analyze lagging and leading indicators, dashboards, audit results, and benchmarking data to inform and adjust EHS strategies and objectives.
- Direct engagement with regulatory agencies, external auditors, and certification bodies, including preparing formal submissions and managing compliance actions.
- Lead the recruitment, performance management, mentoring, and professional development of the EHS team, ensuring succession readiness and capability building.
- Develop and manage EHS budgets, resource planning, and cost-benefit analyses of key initiatives.
- Represent EHS in senior leadership meetings, contributing to enterprise risk management, compliance reviews, and business continuity planning.
- Guide company-wide sustainability and ESG initiatives focused on reducing environmental footprint, increasing resource efficiency, and meeting stakeholder expectations.
- Lead cross-functional EHS project teams, manage consultants/vendors, and drive the successful implementation of enterprise-wide improvement initiatives.
- Act as company representative in relevant industry forums, external committees, or professional safety and environmental associations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or closely related field.
Licenses/Certifications: Must hold or obtain within 90 days of employment and be able to continue to maintain the following certifications:
- First Aid & CPR w/AED
- Railroad Safety training and certifications
- Professional safety or environmental certifications: OHST/CHST, ASP, GSP, CHMM
Experience:
- 8+ yrs of EHS experience, with at least 3 years managing a team of professionals or managing managers in multi-site or field-based environments.
- Knowledge of EHS regulations and demonstrated success in regulatory negotiations or audits.
- Experience building and maintaining EHS management systems, reporting frameworks, and enterprise-level training programs.
- Analytical skills, ability to present findings to executives, and a solutions-oriented mindset.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and passport and be able to travel across NA, including to CN and Mexico.
