GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:
The Chief Engineer provides leadership in the long-term development and support of assigned product lines to meet domestic and international market needs. The individual in this position works cross functionally across multiple lines of business to identify and develop design enhancements and ensure appropriate risk mitigation plans are in place.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Functional & Technical Skills
- Collaborate with Marketing personnel and engage with customers to establish short and long-term technical vision for assigned product lines. Develop and manage technical specifications for assigned product lines.
- Provide technical evaluation of competitive offerings, monitor current developments and industry trends as they relate to assigned product lines, and provide recommendations for Loram product enhancements and upgrades.
- Work with Marketing, Operations, and external customers to provide technical business case justifications for new technology development initiatives and advance the capabilities of current product lines.
- Prioritize and execute creation of engineering proposal documents through Request for Information (RFI) process to support sales opportunities for new equipment builds and aftermarket for existing equipment.
- Review, approve, and prioritize Engineering Change Requests (ECR) within assigned product lines based on business case and alignment to established product vision; work with stakeholders to develop improvements to existing products and to resolve technical issues.
- Coordinate and support assigned new products through Loram’s Product Development (PD) process setting design guidelines to enable efficient and cost-effective products.
Compliance
- Assist in design for manufacture assessments of proposed designs, sourcing strategies, project management, and in identification of cost reduction opportunities.
- Identify, plan, and support research and/or development work, including developing specifications, justifications, budget estimates, concept drawings, bill of materials (BOM) structure, and other necessary documents.
- Provide technical guidance, oversight, and mentoring to internal and external engineering resources in technical knowledge, application, and processes.
- Promote consistency, quality, and safety within and across product lines.
- Ensure conformance to rules, regulations, and performance specifications are applied throughout the development program and product life cycle.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelors Degree in Engineering
Experience: 8+ Years Heavy equipment product line development, Multi discipline engineering integration and Customer interaction. 6+ Experience as a Chief Engineer or similar role
*12+ years combination of education and experience in heavy equipment product line development, multi discipline engineering integration and customer interaction.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Advanced Degree in Business/ Engineering
Experience: 4 years leading CFT and 2 years Project Management experience. 12+ years heavy equipment product line development, multi discipline engineering integration and customer interaction.
Licenses/Certifications: Obtain and maintain Railroad Certifications, Professional Engineer and AREMA Committee Membership
