GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:
The Engineer III, R&D Technology is responsible for research, design, prototyping, and testing. This position requires a very developed technical background with the ability to integrate software, firmware, mechanical, electrical, and imaging technology.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Research
- Evaluate and analyze positive and negative aspects of competing technologies or solutions
- Grow industry expertise through trade show attendance, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications
- Generate new research ideas in line with company growth areas
Design
- Conceptualize innovative solutions and exhibit problem-solving skills as needed by projects
- Propose solutions by utilizing proper modeling techniques such as CAD, Monte-Carlo, etc.
- Work with engineering, operations, sales, and product development teams to optimize design approach
- Utilize external software, research, and leverage industry partners as needed
Prototyping
- Implement technology-based solutions for railroad industry including laboratory, trackside, hy-rail, and rail-bound applications
- Implement solutions within constraints of timeline, budget, functionality, and operational parameters
Testing
- Work in local and remote locations including research facilities, field offices, and railroad environments
- Conduct all tests in accordance with company and railroad safety operating procedures
- Assess system performance, prepare written and oral reports, optimize accordingly and make recommendations for future enhancements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelors degree in engineering field
Experience:
5+ years of experience and ability to learn various computer operating systems, computer programming languages and environments, and data analysis software used in nuclear, electrical, and mechanical engineering fields.
Licenses/Certifications: Maintain Railroad Certifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Presentation at conferences or publications in peer reviewed journal
- Successful technical leadership of an R&D project
- Demonstration of strategic technical decisions positively impacting project design
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Professional Engineering Certification (P.E.)
Masters degree in engineering field
